LLM "AI" fails

I have little faith in the accuracy and abilities of the "AI" chatbots I have tried.

Chatgpt:
I asked it a few questions early on and found its responses repetitive, in line with the old chatbot Eliza.
Recently my nephew engaged with it to try and figure out how to use some public EV charging stations he bought at auction they were from a company that went out of business. chatgpt sent him on a wild goose chase trying to hack the cell phone based router in it, while simultaneously encouraging him and also not really helping him because it did not believe that he owned them. It finally suggested he use a open EV charger kit that basically would have used only the power and charging cables and throw the rest away.

Gemini:
I have an audio clip a cousin gave me. It is from some video or cartoon from before 2000. I can find no information on it and cannot ask my cousin as he is dead. I gave gemini the audio file and it confidently told me it was from a video game. When I researched the video game it was from about 2023. So I went back to it started over told it that it was from before 2000, and was not from that video game. Once again it confidently and assurance that the audio was from the anime X: the movie or x/1999 dubbed version. it gave me details on the scene and other information. so I found the movie on youtube and watched the scene in question. not even close. completely wrong. twice it just made shit up. what it should have said was it did not know, or at best referenced the video I did in a short on youtube trying to identify it. if you search the quote from the file that is the only thing that comes up.

Rufus (amazon):
probably the most retarded and useless one so far. Amazon's search function is shit. it basically ignores boolean search's and will show you things that are sort of related to what you are looking for when you search for something very specific and it does not have it. It is very difficult to get amazons search to come up with nothing.

one day I was looking for a strong magnet with a very specific shape and size. amazon search was turning up the usual completely wrong results. I then went to rufus and asked it. I gave it the size measurements and explained I was not interested in anything that was not that size. It came back with results that did not match the specs I gave it. I told it that, and it then said that there was not really anything on amazon that met my specs. It gave me some options and when I clicked on one of them it was on a site that was not amazon and in another country.

I also mentioned that amazons search is not very good and it responded that this is a common complaint.  I mentioned that I often order a thing that I will never order again and that amazon will show me more of that thing and it is annoying. it responded that this is a common complaint. It told me in a round about way that amazon is setup for standard consumers and that I am not really the type of person the algorithms are designed around... so I have that going for me, which is nice.

I have zero confidence in chatbot AI LLM search engine garbage. Googles AI overview is terrible. it gives overviews that are at best a summary of whatever you searched for and in some cases it returns generic useless instructions along the lines of: "to do X find the manual for it then follow those instructions"

Non OEM battery sellers and manufacturers are lying to you

98% of all sellers and manufacturers of after market batteries for Makita, Dewalt, Milwaukee, Rigid, Ryobi, Bosch, Skil, stanley, and many other secondary market, fake or counterfeits lie about their capacity and capabilities.

The biggest lie is the milliamp hour or amp hour rating. They exaggerate the capacity by as much as 300%.

If you see a cheap battery and it is rated at 4ah or 4000mah it will often be 2000 to 3000mah. If it is 6ah it could be 3 or 4ah. I have never seen an after market non OEM battery with a capacity higher than 4ah.

18650 batteries are expensive even if you buy them in bulk.

The second biggest lie is that they have cell balancing, or over discharge protection. Assume that they do not.

There is also a large amount of counterfeit batteries. See you tools manufacturer website for information on how to spot them.

Apco P25 Simulcast issues Whistler and Grecom scanners

These are possible fixes for scanners based on the Grecom PSR-500, PSR-600 (radio shack pro-651, pro-652, pro-106, pro-197), and whistler WS1040, plus the non GRE based scanners WS1080, WS1088, and possibly the TRX-1, TRX-2. These are mostly meant for scanning inside your house. They may help for Apco P25 Phase I and/or Phase II.

I will not give details on how to find and change the settings do not ask. Google exists.

When testing it can help to have a known working scanner set to the system you are trying to get working so you know when the system is transmitting (I have a WS1088 and PSR-651). Make one change at a time, and then wait for results. this includes adjusting settings on any external antenna amplifier.

Here are the settings that seem to help receiving in a simulcast environment:

for the GRECOM based scanners:
Check that NFM is on or not on TSYS. for some systems this matters and for others not so much.
Squelch setting can be an issue. I turn it all the way down with only that system enabled, and then adjust it up until the S disappears. I find that setting the squelch properly has more effect on successfully receiving Apco p25 signals that many other settings.
Enabling CC Dump on win500 can help as you can see when it is receiving a control channel.
try setting MultiSite Mode to Roam, and set Threshold Hi to 85, and Threshold Lo to 50 or 55.
Enable or Disable AGC for the TSYS System.
In Extended settings set digital detect timeout to 60
Noise Threshold to 45
CC Detect timeout to 30
VC RF SQ to 50
VC Digital timeout 100
Qualify CC in analyze 100
Try using a rubber duck antenna, or your roof antenna. see which one works better.
Try different roof antennas. For my Grecom scanner a whip antenna seems to work better, but for my Whistler my discone seems to work better.

For the Whistler (newer than WS1040) scanners:
Check that NFM is on or not. for some systems this matters and for others not so much.
Set Multi-Site Settings Data Decode Threshold: Low:50 and High:85 (this setting made the most dramatic change)
Set AGC (as far as I know this is not Digital AGC) on either globally or for individual Talk group ID's.
Try using a rubber duck antenna, or your roof antenna. see which one works better.
Try different roof antennas. For my Grecom scanner a whip antenna seems to work better, but for my Whistler my discone seems to work better.

Other contributing factors to the problems I had receiving P25 was that one of my cables was damaged, and another was too close to something that caused interference.

For my Whistler WS1088 Turning AGC on and setting the decode thresholds greatly improved my ability to receive P25 Phase I, as well as using my roof discone.

I have experimented with various combinations of antennas, and using a Jim M-75 signal amplifier with mixed results. it helps for some systems, and makes things worse for others.

I did not have much trouble receive P25 systems when using the rubber duck antenna and driving around.

Long term effects of distributed computing

I used to have my computers as part of SETI@home, and other BOINC based distributed computing. I did not make a correlation with this causing problems in the long term until recently.

In the last 15 years I have had to replace the motherboard in 3 computers twice. At first I though this was just computers getting old, but I now suspect that in all 3 cases the demise of the motherboards or problems that had arisen were because of the intensive CPU usage of these programs.

2 Intel DP67BG motherboards with failing or bad CPU power regulators
2 Vostro 220 motherboards with failing or bad CPU power regulators
1  HP Z2 G4 motherboard with failing or bad CPU power regulators

The Intel DP67BG's just died with no warning, The first one in 2014 (3 years after I got it) and at the time I had been using BOINC with SETI@home until that program ended in 2020, and then Folding@home until January 2021 when the second motherboard failed.

The Vostro 220 Was running SETI@home since sometime before 2010, and I had replaced the motherboard once around 2015, and then again in 2024. I had been running different BOINC programs in the last 9 years before the second motherboard failed. I am no longer running any BOINC programs on it.

In the case of the HP Z2 G4 I though the issue was my Nvidia RTX 4000, as the problem first appeared with random reboots in the middle of the night, and when playing a game with intensive real time ray tracing, and heavy CPU usage. basically the computer would pull more than 3 amps from the wall and then suddenly reboot. I had been running Folding@home during the night. When I removed BOINC the problem then only appeared when I was playing a game. I eventually had to replace the motherboard. So far the new motherboard has not had the problem and I am not running any Distributed computing programs and will probably not in the future.

In every case the CPU voltage regulators were either failing or somehow damaged from possible overheating. Some of the boards had heat sinks on them, others did not.

Sorry BOINC I cannot afford to have anymore computers die.

This may seem anecdotal but I have other computers that still work after 10 or more years of constant use, and those have never ran any distributed computer programs.

ONCE AGAIN screw microsoft edge how to force edge to not expire IE mode

microsoft edge keeps ignoring my group policy to setup edge to open specific websites in Internet explorer mode. I followed microsofts instructions but they don't work so I found 2 things that let me use websites in IE mode, or even Internet explorer on window 10.

First is a script that changes edge Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode (IE mode) and have them expire some time far in the future. in my case 2099. however you have to sign out of edge and delete your profile (in edge) for it to work.

The other is a program that allows you to actually run Internet explorer for 1 web page.

https://github.com/LesFerch/IEModeExpiryFix

https://github.com/LesFerch/LaunchIE

Creating a batch file with the following commands will allow you to run Internet explorer 11 on windows 10 and 11.

:: Enable IE Standalone
reg add "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BYPASS_SBE_FDD5E421" /v "iexplore.exe" /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BYPASS_SBE_08A97D41B2F8" /v "iexplore.exe" /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

:: Disable IEToEdge_BHO
reg delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Approved Extensions" /v "{1FD49718-1D00-4B19-AF5F-070AF6D5D54C}" /f
reg add "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Settings\{1FD49718-1D00-4B19-AF5F-070AF6D5D54C}" /v Flags /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

screw you microsoft. edge sucks, I need internet explorer to access certain web pages and I don't need you deciding for how long. assholes!

SDRSharp Crashes while tuning with HackRF one or other SDR radios

Not sure why the last several versions of SDRSHARP all crash when tuning or for all sorts of other reasons but it seems to be a problem since 1.0.0.1911.

I have tried all sorts of fixes and nothing worked so I did some research and the last stable version of the program that I could find is 1.0.0.1910, available here. click on the link in "To download the updated MeteorGIS Suite Installer".

extract the sdrsharp folder inside rename your old sdrsharp folder, put this one in the same location as the crashing one, but do not overwrite it.  then you can copy your frequencies.xml overwriting the 1910 version. you will have to re-setup the interface and things will be different, and some features missing but at least it won't crash all the time.

other versions available here: https://www.reddit.com/r/RTLSDR/comments/lcxz2f/my_sdr_collection_for_those_who_need_prior/

System is booting in manufacturing program mode

You have just replaced your HP computers motherboard with a brand new one and see this:

"System is booting in Manufacturing Program Mode

Warning: Your system is not fully configured. Please contact HP customer support."

none of this will prevent you from using your computer, it's just annoying.

Searching on the internet you find that you need all sorts of special programs like sssm.bat, wndmifit or NbDmiFit and that you have to enter a feature byte (and other things) in the bios, but when you try to do that it doesn't work (CRC error) because the font used on the sticker on the bottom of your computer is confusing as to what is capitalized and what is not. you must enter the feature byte exactly as it is shown but without the spaces.

Here is a random feature byte label as found in the internet:

Don't try to use this one on your computer they are specific to computers and contain information telling HP software what you can install/are entitled to.

To successfully get your computer out of manufacturing mode you will need:

The feature byte

Build ID (BID)

Serial number

all of this can be found on the labels on the bottom or side of the computer.

The hard way to do this is to enter the bios and manually enter them.

the easy way is to download the HP bios configuration utility. If the link does not work, just google it. This is the way I did it, I don't know if there is a faster way, this worked for me.

from an administrator command prompt type the following:

 BiosConfigUtility  /get:"config.txt"

open the config.txt and remove everything except:

BIOSConfig 1.0

 Feature Byte

 Build ID

Serial Number

 Manufacturing Programming Mode
    *Unlock
    Lock

SureStart Production Mode
    Disable
    *Enable

Next go to HP Partsurfer and enter your serial number which looks like this MXL1923KCW (don't use this one it's made up).

look for IMG_Desc1 IMG_Desc2 this is your feature byte. copy and paste it in to notepad, first desc 1 then 2, then remove spaces. you should have something like this:

3X476J6S6U6b7N7Q7T7U7w7a8HaBaUapaQaubhdUdXdpdqfJg3hKhZjhk8.5h (not a real byte).

now get your build ID from the bottom label

18KKLSMT6**SABA#DABA  (not a real BID).

save your config.txt as newconf.txt and remove everything but this:

 BIOSConfig 1.0

Feature Byte
    3X476J6S6U6b7N7Q7T7U7w7a8HaBaUapaQaubhdUdXdpdqfJg3hKhZjhk8.5h
Build ID
    18KKLSMT6**SABA#DABA
Serial Number
    MXL1923KCW

 save the file.

from an administrator command prompt in the folder with the bios utility type:

 BiosConfigUtility  /set:"newconf.txt"

it should report that there were no errors, if there is a problem with the feature byte, it might require calling HP.

reboot.

go back to the config.txt and remove everything but this:

BIOSConfig 1.0

Manufacturing Programming Mode
    Unlock
    *Lock

  save as newconf.txt

 run  BiosConfigUtility  /set:"newconf.txt"

reboot, and the  System is booting in Manufacturing Program Mode should be gone. either go in to the bios f10 or it will automatically go in to the bios and ask if you want to commit the changes say yes, and it will reboot.

 edit the newconf.txt to read:

BIOSConfig 1.0

SureStart Production Mode
    Disable
    *Enable

save

  run  BiosConfigUtility  /set:"newconf.txt"

reboot and the  Warning: Your system is not fully configured. Please contact HP customer support. should now be gone.

this is way easier than reentering the feature byte over and over till you get it right.

you might be able to do this in one go by putting the changes in one file and uploading it once, but that is not how I did it, and I cannot try it to see if it works as supposedly once the feature byte is programmed it cannot be changed.

-------------------

The air was thick with the acrid stench of Liberty’s decaying ideals—a noxious cloud that clung to the rooftops like industrial smog. Down in the gutters, a lone snail slurped its breakfast cereal, mandibles clicking in time to the distant hum of malfunctioning surveillance drones. The strawberries weren’t just fruit anymore; they were firmware updates, pulsing with neon veins as they rewrote the city’s operating system overnight. Meanwhile, the crickets had unionized, their chirps now a rhythmic protest against the leverage of unseen oligarchs. Up wasn’t a direction—it was a mutation. Vines twisted skyward, birthing griffins with gasoline breath, while gas masks became religious relics, filters clogged with the particulate matter of unanswered questions. Somewhere beyond the stratosphere, a pixelated unicorn vomited glitter into the void, its mane a tangled fiber-optic cable. The ferrets knew. They’d always known—perched on lime-green chairs, nibbling pickled lice like aristocratic canapés. A chicken, waggish and unrepentant, balanced atop a snail’s spiral shell, crowing verses from an ancient grimoire. The cheese was hydrogenated, the cheese was lies. And the man? Oh, the man was a splintered chair leg, too stubborn to fall, too splintered to stand. The universe tasted like burnt chicken and static, and the only thing left to do was squint harder.
